Digital Workplace: What freelancers should know about it

Published on 25.09.2018

Digital Workplace means home office in a new quality. But that’s not all. Find out what freelancers can expect from the further spread of a digital workplace.

Digital Workplace: What awaits us?

Will it be possible in the future for freelancers to handle the entire project from home? Or from any other place in the world? Whether Berlin or Bali would be the decision of every freelancer himself. Is that just a dream or soon reality? Unfortunately, no one knows exactly what the future will bring but it looks as if the Digital Workplace and thus the complete self-organization of work will continue to increase.
But what exactly is the Digital Workplace? There are different views on this but yet some common elements can be identified: The Digital Workplace is meant to give employees, and therefore freelancers, more freedom. Freedom in relation to the place of work, but also in terms of timing. This is possible by a digital design of the workplace. Employees get more freedom using their PC, smartphone, tablet and technologies such as cloud services, platforms and virtual desktops. Because when using them they can access the relevant data at any time and from any place, the only thing they need is a working internet connection.

Digital Workplace and the work of freelancers

Especially for freelancers, the Digital Workplace can simplify the daily work immensely and thus contribute to a better work-life balance. The study “The Digital Workplace Value” by Citrix in collaboration with Crisp Research also confirms that. One of the results: 64 percent of respondents claim that having a digital workplace gives them more free time and thus time for their friends and family than before.
And there are even more advantages: the Digital Workplace saves travel time and other travel costs, as employees no longer have to drive to the office or to the customer. A plus for the people, but also for the environment.
In short, a Digital Workplace can boost one’s motivation and increases productivity. However, the study shows also that there is still room for improvement: Only 35 percent of respondents in the study who could use a Digital Workplace are allowed to do so without restriction – at least until now.

Outlook: What do we expect in the near future from a Digital Workplace?

It can be assumed that the possibilities of flexible work will continue to expand in the next few years. In the above mentioned study 43 percent of surveyed companies have announced plans to launch a Digital Workplace in the future. Because after all, it has enormous advantages for companies: Productivity is increased since routine tasks can be carried out completely automatically. Real-time bots and translation programs, just to name two examples, can reduce employees’ workload. And that in turn has positive influences on the freelancers or employees. Those who do not have to spend time doing routine tasks can use their creativity in other ways. A digital work environment can push that even further. Probably in the future cooperation with an artificial intelligence (AI) will be strengthened. It is then their job to make new suggestions to the employees so that they can come to new ideas and insights.
In addition, cooperation with other people will continue to increase: global working groups, world wide teams and the integration of different systems and disciplines will no longer be a rarity. One of the tasks of the Digital Workplace will be to facilitate collaboration, for example through new forms of social intranet.
So we can be surprised what innovations we will encounter in the further course of the digital transformation.
